DC-based architect designs $350 million Hanoi embassy under construction

District-based architect Page is designing the nearly $350 million new US embassy under construction in Hanoi, Vietnam.

A US Department of State news release issued on April 15 says the groundbreaking occurred that day. L. Harbert International of Birmingham, Alabama, is the construction contractor.

“The embassy’s design embraces the modern urban landscape and natural beauty of Hanoi and incorporates the latest in sustainable design features,” the statement says. “Drawing inspiration from the rice paddies that surround the region, a terraced landscape solution has been applied to mitigate rainwater, and all major structures are elevated one meter above the projected flood plain. Sustainable materials with high recycled content, low embodied carbon, and low levels of volatile organic compounds will be used to ensure a healthy and energy-efficient interior.”
