Contractors wishing to learn about the risks of misclassifying workers as independent contractors — including indirect situations when subcontractors are responsible for the misclassification — have been invited to a Washington Building Congress (WBC) webinar on this topic.
There is no fee to attend the Zoom Webinar on May 19 from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. presented by Cozen O’Connor’s Debra Friedman and Larry Prosen.
The event description says that “under DC, Maryland and Virginia law, upper tier subcontractors and prime contractors are potentially liable for the failure of their lower-tier subcontractor to properly pay and classify their workers.”
“Under various laws, which started out of California, many jurisdictions have passed statutes that hold those in an upper tier contractual positions jointly and severally liable for wage theft and misclassification.
Locally the DC Office of Attorney General has placed a target on these types of cases,” the program description says.
The seminar will discuss the overall law and regulations on employee versus independent contractors; wage theft laws and other related issues.
